  • 7 tips to extend the life of your hearing aid batteries
In the past, mercury batteries were mainly used. In recent years, they have been replaced by zinc-air batteries. They are more environmentally friendly and keep the voltage constant. They work according to a simple principle: there are small holes in the surface of the battery through which air can penetrate. This air melts in the battery together with the zinc, creating zinc oxide, a reaction that generates energy.
Of course it is important that this process only starts when the battery is in the hearing aid. That is why hearing aid batteries are provided with a special protective film.
As soon as the protective film has been removed, the battery starts to discharge. So remove the protection only if you are actually going to use the battery.

The most frequently asked questions about batteries for hearing aids

How many hearing aid batteries do I need?

You need one battery per hearing aid.

How often do I have to replace the battery in my hearing aids?

That depends on the battery size and the power of your hearing aid. Smaller batteries last less. All batteries have a charge of 1.4 volts. Smaller batteries have a smaller capacity to deliver that 1.4 Volts and therefore a shorter lifespan.

The life of the smallest 10 battery in a device with additional functions is around three to five days, while the life of a larger 13 battery in a simpler device can last up to three weeks. Moreover, the life of a battery also depends on how much you wear the hearing aid.

Are there different batteries for hearing aids?

Hearing aid batteries come in four different sizes: 10, 13, 312 and 675. Behind-the-ear hearing aids mainly use battery types 13 and 312, while in-the-ear hearing aids have types 312 and 10. Battery type 675 is the most powerful and is therefore mainly used with Power devices that use more energy.

How do I know which battery type is the right one?

It is best to rely on an old packaging. Batteries for hearing aids come in four sizes: 10, 13, 312 and 675. On the packaging, this figure is always stated on the right. Each battery size also has its own color that is always the same.

Type Color Diameter Height Capacity Voltage
675 Blue 11.6 mm 5.4 mm 650 mAh 1.4 V
13 Orange 7.9 mm 5.4 mm 310 mAh 1.4 V
312 Brown 7.9 mm 3.6 mm 180 mAh 1.4V
10 Green 5.8 mm 3.6 mm 100 mAh 1.4 V

How do I replace the battery?

Remove the plastic protective film from the battery and wait two minutes before you insert the battery into the device. In this way the oxidation process takes full effect.

Note the minus and plus sides of the battery. If the battery chamber does not close or has difficulty closing, the battery is probably in the opposite direction. If your hearing aid does not work despite the new battery, check that there is no dirt in the battery room. That can cause poor contact.

Do not leave a flat battery in your hearing aid. This way you prevent them from draining.

What do I do with my old batteries?

Do not dispose of used batteries in the household waste, but bring them into the hearing center for recycling.

Hearing aid batteries keeping tips.

1. Store your batteries in the dark and at approx. 18 °
In your bedside table or in a cool storage room is ideal.

2. Do not keep them in the refrigerator
It is too cold there. When you start using the battery, the air condenses,
causing moisture drops on the battery. Then there is more chance that the battery will go out
to leak. Keep your batteries in a cool and dry place.

3. Do not store batteries in your pocket
Everyone with a hearing aid has spare batteries with him. Do not try to put it in your pocket
save it. Your body temperature is too high for the batteries.

4. You cannot save your battery by not carrying your device.
Once the battery is in your hearing aid, it releases its charge.

5. Keep the storage time in mind.
On average, batteries save two to three years.

6. Leave them in the package until you use them.
Contact with the air activates the battery.

7. Do not put the battery in the battery compartment immediately.
Let them lie for two minutes after you have taken the stick off. This way you give the battery time to activate.
